The territory of the region of Blagoevgrad is rich of many natural landmarks. The felicitous harmony of mountain massifs, river valleys and varied vegetation is impressive. Nine mountains occupy part of the region’s area. The alpine parts of the mountains of Rila and Pirin efficiently match with the round shapes of Vlahina, Maleshevska, Ogragden, Slavianska, Sturgash and Rodopi mountains. All this complements with the fertile river valleys and the defiles of the rivers Struma and Mesta as well as the beautiful rock formations and caves. The height of the particular peaks varies from 60 meters to 2 914 meters.

The climate varies from temperate continental to Mediterranean in the southernmost parts.
The region includes the mountains, or parts of, Rila (highest point on the Balkan Peninsula – Musala summit, 2925 m), Pirin, Ograzhden, Vlahinska, Rodopi, and Belasitsa. There are two major rivers – Struma and Mesta, with population concentrations along their valleys. The beautiful and preserved environment is widely considered an important resource. A number of national parks and protected territories care for the biodiversity.
